"NOW’s Board commissioned Joy Allen to carry out a review of Governance which led to development and embedding of a Governance Manual for the organisation.  I can, without reserve say that the whole process has been well lead, carried out and concluded.   Joy is a consummate professional with a breadth of experience in the public, private and the third sector which she was able to draw upon to keep us all on track in a process we planned to roll out over 2 years.  In my experience is often difficult to manage senior Managers and Board Members on a project such as this, but Joy has done this successfully ensuring all involved felt part of shaping a framework perfectly suited to our organisation.

We have been extremely happy with the work carried out by Focus on Governance in respect of pricing, contract management and approach.  We now have what we feel is one of the best Governance Manuals in the sector which is used by staff and Board alike, and our work on Governance has even been recognised in a 2010 award for Excellence in Governance from C03 Voyager Awards". Maeve Monaghan, Chief Executive, NOW

In mid 2011 Action Mental Health (AMH) Board decided to commission a Governance Review to assess current governance systems and procedures.  AMH required an experienced independent consultant or company with the ability to engage with Board Directors and the Chief Executive and to lead them through a process that would ultimately give the Board reassurance that all governance was in line with best practice and current statutory requirements.

After a competitive tender process Joy Allen was awarded the contract based on value and experience.  A process of interviews and discussions with Board members and senior staff followed and a draft action plan was provided for discussion; this was followed by drafting of a Governance Manual and included training to ensure Board members fully understood their responsibilities.

“Throughout our Governance Review process AMH Board members were impressed by Joy’s ability to draw on her extensive experience and to relate it to AMH’s requirements.  Her experience gives her a credibility which was important when dealing with experienced Board members and they particularly valued the training and interactive nature of the sessions she delivered.  She was trusted by them and they were happy to be challenged by her during the sessions.  She has a good manner and was able to relate very well to AMH’s diverse range of Board members.  There was a clear plan at the outset and this was well managed by her and fitted in with the needs of the Board.  She was prompt and met deadlines and all her work was to a high standard.  She remained available for ad hoc advice and remained flexible to AMH’s specific needs”.

AMH has had a very positive experience working with Joy Allen and the Board would be very happy to recommend her work to similar organisations.  The review she delivered was relevant, value for money and more than met expectations. David Babington, Chief Executive, Action Mental Health
